FAQs

Pulau Tenaga Hijau (PTH)

Pulau Tenaga Hijau (PTH) refers to a project with the purpose of supplying electrical power to remote islands that are not connected to the main electrical grid, with a focus on using more sustainable and eco-friendly energy sources. This project will be implemented on the islands of Perhentian, Redang, and Tioman.

The primary objective of the PTH project is to serve as a pioneering initiative for electrical supply based on Renewable Energy (RE) sources. There are three (3) main elements to this Pulau Tenaga Hijau project, namely:

  1. Enhancement of system reliability;
  2. Application of smart grid technology; and
  3. Reduction of operation cost due to the utilization of RE electrical supply source.

The PTH project is crucial to serve as the first model for electrical supply on islands based on more sustainable and eco-friendly energy sources, setting a precedent for other remote off-grid islands. The success of this project will be both a starting point and a benchmark for sustainable energy supply on islands throughout the country, while aligning itself with government’s commitment in achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Government will prioritize efforts in energy transition from a diesel-based power generation to more sustainable and eco-friendly energy sources. The utilization of RE energy sources, introductions to smart grid technology, and enhancements to the system reticulation will be implemented in stages with the objective of the enhancement of system reliability on these islands.

Consumers:

  1. Fuel Cost Savings due to reduced operation by the diesel generator for electricity supply.
  2. System Reliability improvements.
  3. Energy Efficient management and planning.
  4. Economy stimulator for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Nation:

  1. Environmental conservation, especially coral reefs.
  2. Setting examples among ASEAN countries for low carbon footprint & smart energy.
  3. Pioneering Smart Grid and sustainable energy use in islands.
  4. Unique attractions to boost tourism industry.
  5. Driving the education system to adopt green and new technology-based approaches.

The Pulau Tenaga Hijau (PTH) project is an initiative led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Climate Change (NRECC), in collaboration with the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga), which acts as the lead agency. TNB Distribution Network (TNB DN) is the implementing agency responsible for carrying out the project.

The electricity supply system will become more reliable after the Pulau Tenaga Hijau project has developed. Consequently, existing diesel generators are encouraged to be retained as standby units for backup purposes.
