Lightning Protection System

Based on the Answer to Question 3, does this mean that all buildings subject to this Directive are required to install a Lightning Protection System (LPS)?

This Directive requires Competent Persons, Electrical Services Contractors, Electrical Contractors, consultants, building owners or building management to comply with Malaysian Standard MS IEC 62305: 2007, where Part 2 of the standard (MS IEC 62305: 2007 Part 2) states the requirement to conduct a Risk Assessment before installing an LPS. The Risk Assessment carried out will determine whether the building is high-risk or low-risk for the purpose of LPS installation.

In addition to determining whether LPS installation is required, the Risk Assessment will also determine the appropriate level of protection for the building (Level 1, 2, 3 or 4). If installation is not required, the building need not be equipped with an LPS.

Nevertheless, building owners or building management are reminded to keep the Risk Assessment report on file for submission to ST officers, if required.
